The serpentine belt is a rubber belt that is used to drive a few of your components and is mounted on the left side of the car. When you hear squealing not coming from your tires because you are a little heavy-footed but from the engine bay, it is more than likely this belt going out. The main thing you want to remember when removing this for any reason is it is running in a very specific route. Some people are lucky, and there will be a little placard on either the hood are above the radiator at the front of the engine bay. For others, I would suggest taking a picture or two for installation purposes. The primary component holding the belt is the tensioner. I have attached both an image of the tensioner(Bottom) itself and a basic routing schematic(Top) that illustrates the number of components generally driven by the serpentine belt.
